haunted trees

Our Autumn begins early, and our Halloween is usually met with bare limbs on many trees. They reach out like skeleton fingers as you walk beneath them, threatening to grab at your hair and tickle your spine. And even those evergreen mammoths hold a rather eerie appearance this time of year. So a late day walk through the woods these days may hold more than you bargained for... if you allow your imagination to get the better of you.

"Something plucked at my heart and made me feel afraid."
Algernon Blackwood (The Willows)

A mist has covered us for the past few days.... cold and miserable really. And the sky has been overcast in grey. It lays down upon you when you are out, weighing you down with each step you take. And the shadows... they seem to hold secrets.

"Shadows of a thousand years rise again unseen,
Voices whisper in the trees, "Tonight is Halloween!"
Dexter Kozen

Look... just over there... through the branches and pine cones. What do you see? A figure drifting through the woods? Or perhaps your eyes are playing tricks on you. Dare you risk looking longer or should you run away? What are you seeing... this can't be real. Are you going mad?

"We all go a little mad sometimes." - Norman Bates, Psycho

The ominous giants, bare to the bark now. They hover above as if waiting for something. Within their branches ares memories of glorious times lost... ghosts perhaps, of what once was.

"Then away out in the woods I heard that kind of a sound that a ghost makes
when it wants to tell about something that's on its mind and can't make itself understood,
and so can't rest easy in its grave, and has to go about that way every night grieving."
Mark Twain

Halloween is almost here.
